The SAL Blog

Working on the salship.se website

The salship.se website was started in 1998, when my sons and I needed some kind of activity during a rainy summer week. Since then the website has developed into a huge portal and resource about an important part of 20th century shipping and Swedish corporate history. The site also plays a central part in my interest in the Swedish - American heritage.

David Leidenborg has found a cocktail menu from 1970, and has a question about two of the drinks on the list.

What is a Gripsholm Special for $0.40 and a Kungsholm Special for $0.55?

I know that a Whiskey Special was pure apple juice, and a Champagne Special was the non-alcoholic soft drink "Pommac". These drinks were ordered by the ships' officers who would have to attend 3-5 cocktail parties before dinner, every day.

But were the Gripsholm Special and the Kungsholm Special something else?

I worked in the Kungsholm bars and Main Lounge as deckwaiter 1972 and have kept the cocktail price list (printed 1.12.1971). The price of Gripsholm Special had then gone up to 50 cents and the (even more special, I guess... ) Kungsholm Special was sold at 70 cents.

I worked in the bar onboard the Gripshol so I know what a "Gripsholm Special" was. The drink was mixed of Aquavite, Swedish "punsch" and lemon juice and the one who composed by Gunnar Lövstrand - a bartender.

I have seen a drink calles Gripsholm Toddy in a swedish magazine a few years ago. In the text it was mentioned that it was a warm coctail served onboard the Gripsholm, year unknown. Maybe someone knows that one?
